‘Seapoint with rough sea’ – Sketch.

Seapoint with rough sea‘ – Sketch. This is the sketch for the previous post. It’s the preliminary sketch for the above title. I always try to do at least one sketch before I tackle a painting.

Sketching is my ‘map’ for guidance and clarity on various elements of the final painting: tone, values and sometimes colour notes are essential to my help through the process. Without these little sketches, I feel in the dark. Photos are great, but cannot be relied on sorely. They are specifically a guide – reference comes to mind, and scale more precisely.
