‘James Joyce Tower’ Sandycove

‘James Joyce Tower’ Sandycove. Painted in gouache. This study from the eloquent and picturesque part of South County Dublin is a simple and quick painting. The painting is from the famous James Joyce tower. See my blog page for how I developed this work here.

What I wanted to achieve was flat and grey tones. As there was no sun, it was surprisingly difficult to achieve. The grey of the tower and walls etc were challenging for me to mix. Gouache is not pretty when over -mixed, and this is something I was trying to avoid. Atmosphere and harmony are always in the back of my mind doing these studies.

The greens are forever a gamble for me too. I can never seem to get them the way I want, or when I’m done, I’ll re-do the painting to ‘suit me’. Not good!

When I look at a great painter like Julia Kamenskikh – her work is fresh, spontaneous and clean. This is my aim and hope.
